Travel Guide — Azores

Updated tips from Azores Autos to make the most of your trip between lagoons, volcanoes, and the sea.

Why the Azores?
A mild climate year-round, lush nature, and a sea regularly home to cetaceans. Ideal for hiking, viewing points, hot springs, diving, and scenic drives.

Unmissable places

Sete Cidades (São Miguel)

Monumental caldera with the Blue and Green lagoons, surrounded by Atlantic vegetation. Best views from Miradouro da Vista do Rei and Boca do Inferno.

  • Arrive early on foggy days; check webcams/forecast.
  • Respect marked trails; the ground may be muddy.

Lagoa do Fogo (São Miguel)

Protected crater with steep slopes and endemic flora. Road with hairpins and limited parking at the summit.

  • Conditions change quickly; bring warm clothing and appropriate footwear.

Capelinhos (Faial)

Lunar landscape of the volcano (1957–58) and ruined lighthouse with an Interpretation Center. Excellent for understanding the geology of the Azores.

  • Mandatory sun protection; little shelter from the wind.

Angra do Heroísmo & Monte Brasil (Terceira)

UNESCO historic center, cobbled streets, and viewpoints on Monte Brasil. The Fortress of St. John the Baptist has controlled access; the Inn is located in the Fort of St. Sebastian.

  • Trail to the top of Monte Brasil in ~1 hour; views over Angra.

Pico Mountain (Pico)

Highest point in Portugal (2351m). Climb marked by milestones; Mountain House requires registration and prior reservation.

  • Capacity: 320 visitors/day; 160 simultaneously; overnight stays limited to 32. Book in advance.

Vila Franca Islet (São Miguel)

Old boiler with internal lake. Seasonal access by boat with daily visitor limit.

  • Bathing season (summer): buy tickets in advance; places sell out quickly.

Experiences

Whale watching

There are departures year-round. Spring (Mar–Jun) is the best time to see large whales (blue, fin, and sei). In summer, the chances of sperm whales and dolphins increase.

  • Choose accredited operators and follow safety guidelines.

Spas & wellness

Poça da Dona Beija and Parque Terra Nostra (Furnas) offer thermal pools ~39°C and extended opening hours (including overnight stays).

  • Wear a dark swimsuit (iron water stains light fabrics); bring an extra towel.

Diving and surfing

From June to October, underwater visibility is better and the sea is warmer. On the north coast of São Miguel, Santa Bárbara Beach is a popular surfing destination.

Climate and Best Season

In summary

  • Mild-summer oceanic climate (Csb): ~16–25°C year-round.
  • Wettest months: autumn/winter (peak in Nov–Dec).
  • Driest months: June–August.

When to go

  • Spring: flowery trails + migration of great whales.
  • Summer: calmer sea, bathing, islets/bathing areas.
  • Autumn/Winter: fewer people, variable weather; take a raincoat.

Practical tips (driving & reservations)

  • Popular reservations: Pico (ascent), Vila Franca islet and thermal baths at weekends require advance booking/purchase in high season.
  • Driving: Narrow roads and overlooks with limited parking — drive slowly and use low gears on steep descents.
  • Inter-island: As a rule, rentals must be returned to the same island (sea transport is not permitted by the supplier). Check the conditions of your reservation.
  • Weather: conditions change quickly; check the local forecast and be prepared for occasional showers, even in summer.
