Must-see places in the Azores

These are some of the most iconic places to include in your itinerary, especially if you rent a car and want to explore the islands with more freedom.

Sete Cidades, São Miguel

A monumental volcanic caldera with the Blue and Green lagoons, surrounded by Atlantic vegetation. The best views are from Vista do Rei and Boca do Inferno viewpoints.

  • Arrive early on foggy days and check the forecast or webcams.
  • Respect marked trails, as the ground can be muddy.

Lagoa do Fogo, São Miguel

A protected crater lake with steep slopes, endemic flora and dramatic views. The road has bends and parking near the top can be limited.

  • Weather changes quickly, so bring a jacket and suitable footwear.

Capelinhos, Faial

A lunar volcanic landscape formed by the 1957–1958 eruption, with a ruined lighthouse and interpretation centre. It is one of the best places to understand Azorean geology.

  • Use sun protection and be prepared for wind.

Angra do Heroísmo and Monte Brasil, Terceira

A UNESCO historic centre with cobbled streets, viewpoints and easy access to Monte Brasil. It is one of the most important cultural stops in the Azores.

  • The walk to the top of Monte Brasil takes about one hour and offers views over Angra.

Pico Mountain, Pico

The highest point in Portugal, reaching 2,351 metres. The climb is marked and requires preparation, registration and advance planning.

  • Access may be limited, so book and confirm conditions in advance.

Vila Franca do Campo Islet, São Miguel

A small volcanic islet with a natural lagoon, accessible seasonally by boat and subject to daily visitor limits.

  • In summer, tickets can sell out quickly, so plan ahead.
Nature and ocean

Experiences to include in your Azores trip

Whale and dolphin watching

Boat trips operate throughout the year. Spring is often associated with migratory large whales, while summer usually brings calmer sea conditions and more outdoor activity.

Thermal baths and wellness

Furnas is known for thermal waters, botanical gardens and relaxing hot pools. Dark swimwear is recommended because iron-rich water can stain light fabrics.

Diving, surfing and sea activities

From late spring to early autumn, the sea is usually more inviting for diving, snorkelling and coastal activities. São Miguel’s north coast is also known for surfing.

Weather

Climate and best time to visit the Azores

The Azores have a mild oceanic climate. Temperatures are comfortable most of the year, but weather can change quickly, especially near lagoons and higher areas.

In summary

  • Mild temperatures throughout the year.
  • Rain is more frequent in autumn and winter.
  • June to August are usually drier and more popular.

When to go

  • Spring: green landscapes, flowers and whale migration season.
  • Summer: bathing areas, boat trips and calmer outdoor days.
  • Autumn and winter: fewer visitors, greener scenery and more variable weather.
Car rental advice

Practical tips for driving and reservations

Book popular activities early

Pico Mountain, Vila Franca Islet, thermal baths and some guided tours may require advance booking, especially in high season and on weekends.

Drive calmly on rural roads

Some roads are narrow, steep or winding. Use low gears on descents, leave extra time and be patient near viewpoints and small villages.

Check inter-island rental conditions

Rental cars usually have to stay on the island where they were collected. If you plan to visit more than one island, it may be better to book a different car on each island.

Prepare for quick weather changes

Bring a light jacket or raincoat, even in summer, and check the local forecast before driving to mountain areas, lagoons or viewpoints.
